$30 Million Gift to Edmonton Hospital for New Outpatient Clinic

Posted by Yoofi Gerard Hagan on Saturday, January 19th, 2013 at 1:49pm.

Donald Kaye is a successful business man who made his mark in the real estate market. He is also quite shy. Kaye started out in Edmonton as a business manager, and then decided to invest in some property. First it was an apartment complex in town, then later a Leduc shopping mall. After years of adding to his portfolio, the 84-year old is now giving back to the city that gave him his start.

Kaye is donating $30 million to the Edmonton’s University Hospital Foundation to be used to fund a new outpatient clinic. A farm boy from the wilds of Alberta, Kaye notes he just wanted to give back. The donation is the largest ever received by the hospital, and the first ever made by Kaye.

The clinic, now named the Kaye Edmonton Clinic, recently opened its doors. Cost to build the facility was $400 million. Services offered to outpatients include family medicine, a senior clinic, day surgery clinics and orthopedic treatments. Also in the planning stages is a mental health centre for adults, a sports medicine centre, a prostate cancer section and a urology unit.

Kaye wanted to make things more convenient for patients in the rural parts of the province that have to visit Edmonton for needed appointments. Not wanting any fanfare, Kaye prefers to keep his gift low-keyed. He just feels good about doing it, and that’s enough for Kaye.
